Civale continued his impressive pitching in the Cape Cod League. He was named New England's top prospect after a summer where he posted a 0.36 ERA with 5 saves and 30 strikeouts. in 27 innings with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

MERIDEN — The four Division I college baseball coaches who spoke at the youth forum at Platt High School Sunday stressed the importance of playing summer ball in the American Legion program.

UConn coach Jim Penders, Hartford’s Justin Blood, Bill Currier of Fairfield and new Quinnipiac pitching coach Pat Egan all said that the high school/Legion pipeline has advantages over travel baseball.

“There are some really good travel programs out there,” said Penders, who just completed his 11th season as the Huskies’ head coach. “There are some really good travel baseball players and some really good travel baseball people out there. However, the coaches that I still rely on the most are the high school coaches.

“It doesn’t matter to me what level of baseball they played or coached at before. They can tell me if a young man is accountable, if he’s dependable, if he’s caring, if he’s self-disciplined, if he pays attention to detail. Those are the building blocks. Then it’s up to me to evaluate him as a player.”

With the number of travel programs growing by the year, probably in the 25 range now, the college coaches acknowledged that some are more responsible than others and that it’s buyer beware.

“The Legion coach, what’s his motivation?” Penders asked. “These guys aren’t in it for the money. The high school coach isn’t in it for a $3,000 stipend. It’s all about helping young people get to where they’re going.

“Sometimes there are other people in the game who are in it for [money]. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with it. They’ve got to keep a facility open. They’ve got to pay the bills, pay the mortgage. A lot of them are really great evaluators and great baseball guys, but a lot of times the coaches that don’t have to rely on a check coming in from mom and dad are the ones who are going to give you the real information. If they have to rely on a check coming from mom and dad, are they going to say anything negative about a kid? You don’t get anything really concrete in most cases if a guy’s getting paid to coach him.

“There are exceptions to every rule, but high school coaches and Legion coaches are great resources. A lot of the travel coaches are, too, but you’ve got to weed through them a little more.”

The three-time Big East Coach of the Year has had 38 players either drafted or signed by professional teams during his tenure. Three — Nick Ahmed, George Springer and Mike Olt — were on active major league rosters last year.

Currier spent 22 seasons at the University of Vermont, where he was America East Coach of the Year three times. He’s heading into his fourth season at Fairfield.

“I like Legion kids. Legion kids grow up with the kids they’re playing with. They’re community-oriented and they care about their teammates because they’re from the same school,” he said. “They learn the base-running, the bunting — the team game. With the AAU kids, if they get two or three hits that’s all that matters. Legion is more of a team thing and I like that. If I have a choice, I’m taking the Legion kid.”

Egan, a two-sport star at Rocky Hill High, used a successful pitching experience at Quinnipiac to propel him into a seven-year career in the pro ranks. The Cincinnati Reds made him an offer last year, but he accepted the coaching position to be closer to his wife and infant son.

“From what little experience I’ve had being just around the coaching circuit watching Legion, AAU and different players, I think the most important thing is finding a place where you feel comfortable with the coaching staff, where you’re going to get an opportunity to become a better baseball player,” said Egan, who went as far as Triple-A with the Baltimore Orioles.

“With AAU, too many times, I think, the program is in it for the money. You see that quite a bit where they’re not concerned with the development of the kids or the quality of coaching they have on their staff. It’s not the same with all programs, but I’ve seen it a lot more often.

“The Legion is something I played in when I was in high school. I loved it and I wouldn’t change anything. I think it still offers a great opportunity to play baseball, especially with passionate coaches who often are the parents of the kids that just love being around baseball. It has more of a community feel to it.”

Meriden Post 45 coach Doug Wedge, the organizer of the event along with Meriden scout Ed DiPersio, is the epitome of the difference between somebody who coaches from the heart rather than the call of the dollar bill.

“I tell the guys that once I’m your coach, I’m your coach for life,” said Wedge, who is working to put the Meriden Legion’s new 15-and-under prep team together along with Bryan McCarty, president of the South Meriden Youth League.

“If you ever need something, want something, if you need to talk, come down to see me or call me. I’ve had that happen.”

He said that travel baseball can run a family from $1,500 to $4,000 a year on up for registration alone.

“You pay to try out and you don’t get that back,” Wedge said. “You might pay installments or pay a lump sum, then you have to pay travel expenses to go to tournaments and stuff. It’s expensive.”

Wedge said most of the so-called showcases that bring numerous college coaches and pro scouts to one site are in the South.

“If you go down to Maryland, what Connecticut college coach is there seeing Connecticut kids? They aren’t, whereas Justin Blood can come to Meriden to watch a pitching prospect,” he said. “Bill Currier has one of my guys: Mike Bonaiuto is in his sophomore year at Fairfield. They saw him on a Legion field.”

Wedge said he coaches for the satisfaction of knowing he’s helped kids. He told a story about a Legion graduate from a few years ago he ran into in a restaurant who hugged him and thanked him for helping him get to the University of Rhode Island and get a good start on life.

And the cost of playing Legion ball is negligible.

“When I’m 80 years old and you see me walking down the street, just stop and get me an ice cream cone,” Wedge said about any requirements for compensation. “That’ll make me happy.”
